POP Goes the Singers - Community Choirs Spring Concert
Heartstrings, a special needs choir, and The Community Festival Chorale will present their spring performances of a variety of pop tunes, including "Celebration" (Kool & the Gang); "Dust in the Wind" (Kansas); "Roar" (Katy Perry); "Love Will Keep Us Togehter" (Captain & Tenille); and more. The choirs will come together to present 2 songs - "We Are the World" and "Stand By Me" (Ben E. King).
Heartstrings is composed of singers with (and a couple helpers without) special needs. They have met once a week since February to not only learn the songs, but learn about balance of singing together and singing thru anxieties. They also get instruction in the use of microphones. Most singers have an opportunity to sing a solo or in a small group for most of the songs, helping them build confidence and teaching listeners about acceptance.
The Community Festival Chorale has been a staple in the community for decades, getting it's start under the ATU music department and then becoming its own entity in 2002 under the leadership of Maestro Louis Welcher. The choir is now part of Arkansas Center for Music Education, the local 501c3 non-profit community music education organization. Some of the singers have been with the group since it was part of ATU. The choir performs at least twice a year, presenting a variety of styles of music.
Admission to the concert is free, though donations are gladly accepted to help with the cost of music and operation (director is unpaid).
