University of Arkansas Razorback Marching Band at the Arkansas Derby
The University of Arkansas Razorback Marching Band is headed to the Arkansas Derby!
The band will perform the National Anthem before the start of the $1.5 million Arkansas Derby in Hot Springs on Saturday, March 29! The doors will open at 10:30 a.m. on March 29, and fans are encouraged to arrive early to experience the band’s performance through the day in the infield and before the start of the Arkansas Derby at 6:40 p.m.
The performance is being sponsored by Visit Hot Springs, the city’s destination management organization.
“The Arkansas Derby is one of America’s premier Thoroughbred racing events leading up to racing’s Triple Crown and brings tremendous national media attention to Hot Springs and our city’s attractions,” Visit Hot Springs CEO Steve Arrison said Thursday. “The Razorback Marching Band’s performance of our National Anthem will add a stirring beginning to one of Arkansas’s favorite sporting events.”
“The Razorback Band is known as ‘The Best in Sight and Sound,’ and will set the stage for Arkansas’s biggest day of racing,” said Wayne Smith, chairman of the Hot Springs Advertising and Promotion Commission and general manager of Oaklawn, Hot Springs. “In addition to their pre-race performance, the band will bring their signature energy to the infield, engaging fans and amplifying the electric atmosphere throughout the day. The band’s trumpet section will also perform the Call to the Post for the Derby. It’ll be an unforgettable day of racing and a great display of Arkansas pride.”
The Arkansas Derby annually attracts some of the best 3-year-old Thoroughbred contenders on the road to the Kentucky Derby. The combination of world-class racing and live entertainment makes it one of the most anticipated events in Arkansas.

Arkansas Women in Music
Old State House Museum
The Arkansas Women's History Institute invites you to a program about Arkansas women in music on Sunday, March 30, 2025, with Stephen Koch and Katherine Strause, as they talk about their book: From Almeda To Zilphia: Arkansas Women Who Transformed American Popular Song.
2:00-4:00 pm
Hosted by the Old State House Museum
Light refreshments.
Free.
From Almeda to Zilphia profiles 30 artists who've influenced music around the world in ways we're still discovering. Despite their collective cultural impact, these women's stories have too often been overlooked, forgotten, or never told. Part history, part art, and part music, the book features a wide cross-section of inspirational creatives across the decades. With surprises like Maya Angelou's side career as a calypso singer and Carrie Cash, who recognized that her son, Johnny, had "the gift," From Almeda To Zilphia covers a wide variety of musical styles, including those of Gospel with Rosetta Tharpe, Opera with Marjorie Lawrence, Blues with Sippie Wallace, Folk Ballads with Almeda Riddle, Dance & Pop with Beth Ditto, Classical with Florence Price, and Country with K.T. Oslin.
Working from often hard-to-find historic photographs, vivid portraits by renowned artist Katherine Strause of the women profiled make plain the strength and artistry of these cultural pioneers. With a thoughtful forward by professor Dr. Cherisse Jones-Branch and a heart-wrenching afterword by acclaimed country music songwriter Erin Enderlin, From Almeda To Zilphia is written by musician and award-winning journalist Stephen Koch, writer and host of the syndicated public radio program Arkansongs.
