Opening Reception | M. Speer: An Artist's Journey
Friday, August 4, 5-7 pm
Drinks and Light Refreshments Provided
Upon graduating with language degrees from Colorado College, Fort Smith native Margaret Speer Carter took her first art course at the Fort Worth Fine Arts School. She created a sculpture of an “old man” and was hooked. She continued to learn at art schools in Colorado, New Mexico, and New York, but says her first real art teacher was Casimir Rutkowski – the first director of the Fort Smith Art Center.
We invite you to see the world through Carter’s 60 years of painting. From landscapes from trips around the world, to portraits, still lifes and abstracts, her talent has shown in 26 galleries across the country, including 16 one-woman shows.
“I try to make my art uplifting in some way – calming, intriguing, or thrilling to you,” Carter says. “Art should be strong enough to grab you, and you do not have to know why.”
This exhibition is sponsored by the Udouj Family and Arcbest

Fort City Slam Open Mic!
Bookish: An Indie Shop For Folks Who Read
We believe everyone has something to say--we just provide the mic. First Friday of every month @6pm in Bookish at the Bakery District, Fort Smith.
At these monthly events we hand our microphone to poets/writers who have something to share! We mostly feature poetry but would love to hear you share other brief literary endeavors.
To live up to our namesake we are hosting our second annual traditional slam competition! When slam poetry began in the 1980's it was always a competition, and the judges were chosen from the audience at random each night. So for your enjoyment, we will be doing the same.
Three judges will be chosen from the crowd at random to judge our performers for the evening!
If you'd like to sign up to be a performer, shoot us a message. There will be small prizes! There are no fees to sign up or to attend, but we are always open to donations. We will have complimentary stickers for anyone who donates at the event.
There will be a flash workshop @5pm before the event. We will be in the cooler room this year!

BYOB Book Club and Exchange
Bang-Up Betty
429 Main St, No Little Rock
Bring your own book! Bring your favorite book or something you’ve really loved recently to this relaxed book club and exchange, where you don’t have to worry about committing to a book that’s not your style, there are no discussion questions to keep up with, and you can read at your own pace.
How does it work? Everyone brings a book THEY LOVE and leaves with a book recommended by another book club attendee. You’ll be able to peruse the books, make friends with likeminded readers or explore genres you’re not used to with new pals. Mingle with fellow bookworms, enjoy refreshments, and talk about your favorite tomes. Maybe even meet your new best book pal. We’ll meet again in a couple of months, so you’ve got some time to enjoy your new book suggestion even if you have a busy schedule. When we meet again, you can bring back that same book or bring a different book you love. If you want to bring more than one book, please do! You can add two books to the exchange pile and if you bring more, feel free to exchange them with other guests after the main event. Please be ok with letting your book walk off with a stranger for good in case our bookworm friends don’t bring it back. And PLEASE bring a book you really love, not all the old cookbooks you need to unload from your shelves, and PLEASE no religious books of any sort.

Tim Hammer will lead participants on first-Sunday foraging hikes and cooking workshops on the Ozark Folkways property. These zero-waste events will cover plant ID, Harvest and Reseeding, and Food Preparation.
Hikers will find themselves immersed in native roots, fruits, and nuts! These in-depth hikes will cover fewer plants than previous hikes, but participants will know the plants backward and forward.
As the seasons change so will the availible plants and how they are prepared. August attendees will learn how to make a foraged pizza from the hardwood forest, highlands, and wetlands. They will also earn merits for every plant that will lead to a certificate displaying identification skill, harvest and reseeding talent, and prowess in the kitchen.
Each class will also feature the ability to buy native plants that are started from seed (or saved from construction) by Moonlit Heights Native Nursery. These plants are best adapted to local conditions and will be productive.
Planting instructions will be included.
Workshop fee is $30 each.
