Stroll the Atolls Night Trail
Crystal Bridges Museum
600 Museum Way, Bentonville
July 7, 5-8 pm
Join us on First Friday, July 7 for a celebration of The Great Outdoors! Crystal Bridges co-curated an unforgettable experience on "Navigation" in partnership with the Arkansas Coalition of Marshallese. Everyone is welcome to stroll the Art Trail and immerse themselves in Marshallese culture. You'll have the opportunity to meet and interact with community members who will be sharing their knowledge through cultural activities such as Stick Chart making, scavenger hunts, and food tastings. And, of course, what would a celebration be without music? Island tunes on the sound speakers will be playing throughout the evening, and culminating in a dance performance at 7:30 pm.
Through the night, come chat with Marshallese elders and leaders who will share stories and histories about how their ancestors navigated the Pacific oceans using advanced techniques. Can you believe they could navigate by star mapping, ocean tides, and wind direction? It's truly remarkable! And their knowledge has been passed down through generations, including on a stick chart that you'll get to see for yourself.
This incredible event as serves as an introduction to the Stroll the Atoll Festival on July 29 in Downtown Springdale. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to learn, celebrate, and connect with our community!

King Opera Movie Series: July 8 (2pm & 6pm) Indians, Outlaws, Marshals and the Hangin' Judge
King Opera House, Van Buren
427 Main St, Van Buren
Meet Director Larry Foley - 2 Showtimes (2pm & 6pm, $5 Suggested Donation) Indians, Outlaws, Marshals and the Hangin' Judge - While set in the late 19th century, the stories documented in this film resonate today: gun violence, racial strife, police brutality and American Indian rights. This is a true tale of Indian removal, crime, capital punishment and a charismatic federal judge who sentenced scores of felons to "hang by the neck until you are dead." Outlaw gangs hid from the law in lands given to native people, until Indian Territory was taken away and turned back to settlers. Told in first person using the actual words written by St. Louis Republic newspaper reporter Ada Patterson in September 1896, this real-life story is set in and around Fort Smith, Arkansas, in the same time and place as the fictional Western novel and film, True Grit. Patterson narrates, much as Mattie Ross tells the story in the Charles Portis classic. With careful and honest detail to the words and visual history of the era, we re-create Patterson's interview with Judge Isaac Parker, the infamous "hanging Judge," conducted on the date (September 1, 1896) Parker's court was stripped by Congress of its jurisdiction over Indian Territory. Parker, who was dying of kidney disease, tells Patterson a gripping tale of his court, and his view of American Indians: "Twenty-one year's experience has taught me they are a religiously inclined, law-abiding, authority-respecting people," and of the "brutes" who stood trial before his bench. "
