THURSDAY APRIL 13 AT 9AM - SUNDAY APRIL 15 AT 4 PM

Richard Stephens' Watercolor Workshop

Garland County Library

1427 Malvern Ave, Hot Springs

This class is a 3-day commitment: April 13-15.

For the first time ever, the program is free to all participants and registration is required! A limited number of slots is available, so if you find out you cannot attend, we ask that you please cancel your registration in advance.

Attendees must also bring supplies and materials found at this list: bit.ly/35uA3nJ

The class will last from 9 A.M. to 4 P.M. each day and will include a lunch break.

Watercolor artist Richard Stephens has partnered with the Garland County Library to teach this workshop for many years.

Mr. Stephens shares these words with his students:

"My approach to a Beginning Watercolor Workshop is very different from my more advanced classes.

I spend time on the basic tools of the trade…brushes, water, paints and paper. We do some basic exercises such as color mixing, creating textures, the importance of “timing” in watercolor, water/pigment ratio, how watercolor is vastly different from the opaque mediums, share a few “tricks” we can use in watercolor, suggestion in working from photos, and the importance of developing basic drawing skills and doing value sketches.

Of course, Design Principles are of utmost importance…but, in this class, exposure to the tools and physics of watercolor is the focus.

I do a demonstration painting each day and the students work on their paintings with lots of one-on-one time with me. A successful painting is NOT our goal…becoming familiar with the tools of watercolor is what it is all about."

Hiding in Plain Sight: the Art of Arkansas Tombstones

Ozark Folkways

Hiding in Plain Sight: the Art of Arkansas Tombstones
w/Abby Burnett
Saturday, April 15 @ 1pm

Tombstones in the late 1800s to early 1900s used basic symbols and emblems to convey complex messages (literally, sermons on stones). These designs, copied from pattern books and the works of other carvers, are lovely but so, too, are the primitive carvings made by those with less experience. Headstones can tell us a lot about the people buried beneath them and give us information about their burial customs, religious beliefs and feelings about death and loss. This talk will cover the meanings that stones convey through poetry, basic symbolism, the Victorians’ “Language of flowers” and some of the secret emblems used by fraternal lodges.

The presentation will also include a tutorial (done via PowerPoint) on how to use non-invasive techniques to best see and photograph these carvings, and how to clean stones without causing damage. Hand-outs with cleaning techniques and additional information will be provided.
