Join a park interpreter as you explore interesting sandstone structures, both natural and human-made, on the west end of Mount Magazine State Park on off-trail locations. Expect some uneven terrain and slight inclines. Seasonally appropriate attire, drinking water, and sturdy hiking shoes, are all highly recommended for this moderate-strenuous hike.

Caution- This hiking trail runs along very high cliffs with no railing, so children and pets must be highly supervised by legal guardians at all times.

This workshop will provide an overview of Autism Spectrum Disorders, including characteristics, current research on prevalence, strategies recognized as evidence–based, and resources available for children and families. Examples of visual supports and sensory friendly materials will be available for review by participants. Time will be allotted for questions and discussion by the group. This workshop is designed primarily for families of individuals with ASD, but it is also appropriate for anyone interested in supporting individuals with ASD in their community.

Lunch will be provided during the workshop

About the trainer:
Karan B. Burnette, M.A., CCC-SLP
Ms. Burnette has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology. She has 40 years’ experience working with children with disabilities in educational and residential settings, specializing in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and behavioral intervention. Ms. Burnette currently serves on the Arkansas Legislative Task Force for Autism and the Governor’s Developmental Disabilities Council. She has extensive experience as a consultant and conference speaker and is employed as the Executive Director of UA Partners, Arkansas’ University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research and Service (UCEDD), an outreach program of the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.

The Plum Bayou Mounds site is one of the largest and most impressive archeological sites in the Lower Mississippi River Valley. Aboard a motorized tram, visitors will join a park interpreter for a guided tour of the 3/4-mile Knapp Trail and learn more about these structures and the people who built them.

David “D.L.” Williams is a public safety veteran with assignments including paramedicine, patrol in high-need areas, helicopter rescue, mental health liaison, and violent crime investigations as a detective.

During his thirty-year career, Williams was twice named Officer of the Year by the Fraternal Order of Police, and he has been recognized by Rotary Club, the American Legion, and the National Coalition Against Sexual Violence for his work with families and children in crisis.

Williams is a monthly columnist with Killer Nashville Magazine. He teaches criminology at the University of Arkansas, and he is a bestselling author on topics related to violence prevention and victimology. He and his family have settled in the Ozark Mountains where they offer a haven for donkeys and horses who previously endured a rough life

Some bumpy, some jumpy and even a little slimy, these cold-blooded creatures play an important role in nature and give us clues to the health of our ecosystem. Interact with live toads, frogs and salamanders, while learning more about each of them. Make an amphibian-themed craft to take home as well. Come and go as you please. A 15-minute program will start every half-hour from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
