A Glimpse into Ozone’s History

European settlers began arriving in what would become known as Ozone, Arkansas in the early 1800s, with Major M. Gillian and Kate Gillian establishing one of the first homesteads in 1840. The town grew slowly but steadily, gaining its own post office in 1873.

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) made a lasting impact during the 1930s and '40s throughout Arkansas. They brought infrastructure and conservation efforts to the area. Camp Ozone, now part of the Ozone Recreation Area, housed CCC workers who helped shape the region’s trails and parks.

Another cornerstone of local heritage is the Ozone School, constructed in 1942 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Though it closed in 1957, the school remains a much loved community landmark. It now hosts events, reunions, and serves as a local library.

Ozone may be small, but it that only contributes to the close-knit, welcoming atmosphere in the community. For more arts and culture, residents often travel to nearby towns for community theater at venues like the Ozark Arts Council/Lyric Theater or TheatreSquared in Fayetteville.
