Third Friday Art Walk: Reception & Opening for Layers of Whimsy by Carley Brown

Argenta Library

Argenta Art Walk features walkable galleries on the 3rd Friday downtown North Little Rock in the Argenta Arts District. This event is FREE and open to the public. Wine and light snacks will be served.

This exhibit is FREE to the public and will be on display during library hours Monday--Friday 9 am-6 pm, starting Friday, August 16, 2024, through Friday, September 06, 2024.

Carley Brown's "Layers of Whimsy"

In my artwork I aim to create a surreal-like quality through repetition, flat 2D images, and naturalistic subject matter, combining these different elements to discover a cohesive single image. I attempt to make my work feel dreamy and elicit a sense of wonder from the viewer.

Growing up I watched a lot of cartoons and read a lot of comics with my family. These mediums simplify complex shapes while also providing the freedom to exaggerate forms and features. They provide clarity when communicating certain ideas. I found myself drawn to adding these simple forms on top or alongside naturalistic subject matter, be it people or inanimate objects.

The two most important things to me when creating my work are my concept and my composition. I begin with a few sketches, staying open-minded about what images to include and what not to include alongside my main subject matter to make sure my idea is coming out clearly. The combination of flat 2D images alongside naturalistic forms creates a nice contrast and makes the image feel as if it is not completely situated in reality. Once my sketch is finalized I transfer my idea onto whatever surface I plan to do the finished piece be it digital, canvas or paper.

Artist Bio

My name is Carley Brown, I’m a painter and an illustrator, dabbling in both traditional and digital media. I grew up in Lillington, North Carolina and moved to Little Rock for college. I attended the University of Arkansas in Little Rock and graduated in 2021 with a BFA emphasis in Illustration. I love to make work that is fun and conceptual combing my love for 2D graphic art alongside naturalistic subject matter.

Tacos & Convos

Casa Mañana Rock

Join us! We gather every other Friday for tacos (or whatever you choose) and great convos on the patio. No agenda. Just Arkansans ready for change. Join the movement. This is an informal gathering and we never know if there will be 5 or 20 but it’s always a great time with excellent conversations.

Let us know if you can make it so we can make sure we have enough space. Our group grows every week.

We must use this time between now and November to invite new people to the conversation and expand our circles.

The best solutions come when we all work together, value our differences, embrace our commonalities and strengths and make plans to get stuff done!

If this time and place doesn’t work, plan your own gathering. Invite your friends and a few strangers. Invite your local candidates. Bring along some postcards to fill out. It’s magic y’all! #RegnatPopulus #StandUpArkansas #ConversationsMatter

NWA Chai Time - Community Engagement Series

Fayetteville Public Library

August 2024 Chai Time - Financial Aid for College

The Ra-Ve Cultural Foundation is all about family, and this year we offer a full slate of classes, events, and performances that will enrich your family in so many ways—including our monthly Chai Time, which has come to be to be one of our most popular events. Informative, fun, and full of insights and laughter, Chai Time is now a must-do on social calendars throughout NWA.

Seeking financial aid for higher education in August is a busy time for parents and college-bound kids. Among all the other preparations that must be made for the student, financial aid and how to get it is often at the top of the list. But the process can be complicated and very confusing, and making mistakes can have very serious long-term financial consequences.

Eric Miller, MEd, and Senior Counselor for Financial Literacy at the University of Arkansas will be at our August Chai Time to tell us all about the ins and outs of FAFSA and financial aid, how to navigate through the process, and most importantly, how to avoid mistakes! He will explain how the FAFSA works and how to apply for university and outside scholarships to finance higher education.

Join us on August 18 th for this timely and very informative presentation, from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM at the Fayetteville Public Library!
