Mountain View Iris Festival 2024

Happy 2024 to our iris friends, volunteers, and community members. The 6th annual iris festival will be held on May 3-4, 2024 RAIN or SHINE! It is held the first Friday and Saturday of May. The festival has grown to include additional events. Events and updates will be posted on our website: www.mountainviewirisfest.com, Facebook Groups, and local and state media sites. We do sell iris rhizomes at the festival on Friday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. We are a non-profit 501(c)3 and proceeds from sales go to fund the festival and community gardening projects. Most events are free and family friendly. We showcase over 200 iris varieties, several music genres, our great natural resources, and friendly folks and businesses. Hurry, make lodging plans now. Heritage Herb Spring Extravaganza!
Ozark Folk Center State Park
The Heritage Herb Spring Extravaganza returns to the Ozark Folk Center State Park in scenic Mountain View May 3rd through the 4th. The festival which takes place during National Herb Week is designed for anyone interested in learning about herbs through inspirational demonstrations, downhome food, fragrance, and practical information.
The annual event kicks off with a Lavish Herbal Feast on Thursday, May 2nd. The Spring Extravaganza is a two-day symposium on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. that includes workshops, lectures, and luncheons. Visitors will learn about a variety of plants and herbs, including Yarrow, this Herb of the Year 2024™, and techniques for preserving and preparing food from renown herbalists, gardeners, and authors with decades of experience.

Class: Fused Glass Flower Garden Art Panel with Wooden Base

Bring your favorite flowers to life in a whole new way by recreating them in glass! Participants will learn different techniques to creatively portray the likeness of their chosen flowers and create a stunning and unique fused glass garden to be displayed inside all year long.
This project is a little more complex, so previous fused glass experience is required. If you’ve attended one of our Try It Workshops or Fused Glass Classes, you’re all set. It will be important to arrive at this workshop with the working knowledge of how to safely cut glass for use in design. A wooden base will be provided to display your artwork and we look forward to seeing your glass gardens grow!

This class will be a hands-on, instructional workshop where you will learn how to decorate your very own "Chewy" cake to enjoy on May the 4th (be with you) Just in case you have plans to watch a special movie that day!
All proceeds for this workshop will be donated to the Elkins Senior Center to help with activities and meals for our senior citizens.
Materials and instructions will be provided, and no experience is necessary!

KAYAK CAMPOUT

Join Lake Ouachita State Park staff to make memories and leave nothing but ripples during an overnight kayaking adventure! Join park interpreters along a guided kayak trip to a pristine shoreline campsite. There you will enjoy catered meals and interpretive programming throughout the weekend. Bring your own kayak and supplies or rent them from us. The fee includes three meals and snacks. A $50 non refundable deposit per participant is required to reserve a spot. Children ages 6 and above are welcome, those under age 12 will be required to ride with an adult in a tandem kayak. The trip will require a minimum of 10 guests to be signed up by May 1st, 2024. Join wilderness survival instructor and naturalist Bo Brown at Dogwood Canyon Nature Park for a mosey around the canyon to learn about wildflowers, edible and medicinal plants, and a bit about local archaeology. Bring binoculars if you have them, as there’s always a possibility to see beautiful songbirds and other Ozarks wildlife!

We’ll watch the sun rise above the beautiful Arkansas River Valley spread out below, listen to the birds waking up, and watch them forage for breakfast. We can walk the cliff edge and boardwalk towards the old YMCA building for sparrows and other species in the low shrubs. As the sun warms the air, thermals begin to form, attracting soaring vultures and raptors. Remember—the Early Birder gets the birds!

THE BIG 5 HIKE

Join a park interpreter for a big, 5-mile hike on Mount Magazine! Hiking in some of the same steps of people dating as far back as the 1800s, participants will experience the pure mountain air, the breathtaking views and spectacular nature that has drawn everyone from early settlers, farmers, entrepreneurs and countless tourists to Mount Magazine. This hike will start at the North Rim trailhead by the visitor center, continue on the Mossback
Ridge Trail, and conclude with the Greenfield Trail which will return to the visitor center. Seasonally appropriate attire, drinking water, sturdy hiking shoes, insect repellent, and sunscreen (although this hike is very shaded), are all highly recommended for this moderate-strenuous 5-mile hike.
