Numbers in Nature
Fayetteville Public Library
Pat Walker Community Room
Saturday, March 9th, 2-3pm
Patterns can be found everywhere, especially in nature. From the shapes of galaxies and seashells to the growth patterns of trees and blood vessels, math is a language that can be used to describe these patterns. In fact, Galileo once described math as the language of the universe.
In this program, Environmental Scientist and math enthusiast Eric Fuselier will help reveal many of these patterns and the concepts mathematicians have developed over the centuries to understand them.
What is the Fibonacci sequence and how is it related to flowers? What do periodic cicadas have to do with prime numbers? What’s the relationship between the geometry of honeycombs and the way mud cracks when it dries?
No need to bring a calculator. The concepts covered in this program are simple and easy to understand, even if math wasn’t your favorite subject in school.

Music begins 6:00PM
Shannon Wurst has been sharing the rustic charm of her beloved Ozark Mountain region through her 14-year recording career which spans 6 albums and one EP. With each album there’s been an evolution in her vision. These days she’s releasing a series of singles that showcase more of a country spirit. Through it all, her words and songs may be from the Ozarks, but she’s singing for everyone, bringing them a slice of sweet southern living through her open-hearted and broadly resonant storyteller songs. She has been compared to Dolly Parton, Norah Jones, and Stevie Nicks.
Shannon has garnered much critical praise, career accolades, and awards. She’s earned standout reviews from Blueground Undergrass and Sing Out Folk Magazine whose John Lupton has gushed: "Shannon Wurst is among the rare breed who can make you sit upright and wonder aloud, ‘who is that?’ She is unquestionably arresting.” She has been commissioned to write music for the end-of-day parade for Bentonville, Arkansas’s non-profit, interactive children's Amazeum museum, and to write music for the Arkansas Arts Council’s 2019 play, Bear State of Mind. Shannon has been a finalist at the Merle fest Christ Austin Contest and the Telluride Troubadour Contest, and she was a winner at the Walnut Valley New Song Showcase. Shannon performs actively in the Ozark region, and beyond, and has opened for Robert Earl Keen, Railroad Earth and Carlene Carter, and she has performed alongside artists such as Sam Bush, Margo Price and John Prine.

Author Talk: Jere Steiner
Local author, Jere Steiner, will discuss his book, "Clayton's Chronicles". "Clayton’s Chronicles" offers an intriguing twist to a memoir. While recounting the day-to-day routines and struggles of Clayton Steiner, it provides a unique perspective that unlocks the incredible value and strength of the human spirit. Written from an entertaining and charming point of view, this book will arm anyone battling family dysfunction and self-esteem issues with hope. Its candid and vulnerable account discusses typically taboo subjects and inspires us all to continue to learn, find empowerment, and understand our ultimate worth to ourselves, our communities, and God.
About Jere Steiner:
Jere Steiner was born in Ohio, raised in Oregon, went to college in Kansas, and lived in Washington, upstate New York, and Colorado before settling in NW Arkansas over thirty years ago. An adventurer at heart, he’s worked in an Alaskan sawmill for a summer while living in a tent, rode his bicycle across country, completed an ironman for his 50th birthday, and walked sixty miles on his 60th birthday. But at the top of his adventures list was raising three wonderful children, now productive adults he’s honored to call friends, with his lovely wife of 37 years, Jennifer.
To support his family, and now writing career, he’s been a letter carrier for the Post Office for 29 years – the ideal job to ponder creative projects like his debut book, "Clayton’s Chronicles." Now that he’s nearing retirement, he sees no reason why he can’t spit out a few more outstanding novels to add to his repertoire.
