Theressa Hoover - Fayetteville’s Most Famous Black Female Leader
Join Janet Allured for a presentation on Theressa Hoover, Fayetteville's most famous black female leader.
Theressa Hoover, a Fayetteville native, was CEO of the United Methodist Women from 1968 to 1990 and the highest-level female African American executive in any mainline denomination in the country. Hoover’s family were members of St. James Methodist Church in Fayetteville.
Her many accomplishments include being the only woman for whom a Methodist church has been named (Theressa Hoover United Methodist Church in Little Rock). In the early 2000s, she moved back to Fayetteville to be with family after spending years in New York City (the site of the church’s headquarters). When she died in 2013, leading Methodists from all over the world attended her funeral held at Mount Sequoyah United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, the last church where she was active.
About Janet Allured:
Janet Allured received her Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas in 1988. In 2021 she retired as Professor of History and Women's Studies at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana, left the Gulf Coast behind and moved back to Fayetteville where she was swiftly hired as adjunct professor of history at the University of Arkansas.
Allured has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles on southern women and has co-edited several volumes, including one in the University of Georgia Press’s series on southern women entitled Louisiana Women: Their Lives and Times (2009). A monograph entitled Remapping Second-Wave Feminism: The Long Women's Rights Movement in Louisiana, 1950-1997 was published by the University of Georgia Press in 2016. She is currently writing several manuscripts about the work of progressive Methodist women in the South, with a particular focus on anti-racism and settlement house work. An essay about Theressa Hoover, head of United Methodist Women from 1968-1990, was recently published in an edited collection, Activism in the Name of God, by the University of Mississippi Press.
She is co-editor of a collection of biographies of southern Methodist women that is currently under review by the University Press of Florida.

A Glass Canvas: Digital Art
FREE (registration required)
Join Jan Graham McMillen for tips and techniques in A Glass Canvas: Digital Art session. Digital Art is a category of New Media, which is a huge construct including all the forms of electronic communication which have developed because of computer technology. It is another medium to use and master, like oil painting, watercolor, etching, printmaking, etc. When you use a digital pastel stick to make an image on a digital canvas, it is not a pastel painting, of course. Digital painting will never replace traditional media. It will only join them as another medium of expression. And when you make that mark with a digital tool that shares some of the visual qualities of a pastel stick, you give yourself an extra range of possibilities for that tool.

Exhibition on Screen - Hopper: An American Love Story
Edward Hopper’s work is the most recognizable art in America – popular, praised, and mysterious. Countless painters, photographers, filmmakers and musicians have been influenced by his art – but who was he, and how did a struggling illustrator create such a bounty of notable work?
Presented by Exhibition on Screen, this new film takes a deep look into Hopper’s art, his life, and his relationships. From his early career as an illustrator; his wife giving up her own promising art career to be his manager; his critical and commercial acclaim; and in his own words – this film explores the enigmatic personality behind the brush.
Combined with expert interviews, diaries, and a startling visual reflection of American life, Hopper brings to life America’s arguably most influential artist.
Hopper is a rare artist whose work is accessible to both the casual and critical observer. Rothko, Banksy, Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch, and even The Simpsons have all been inspired by the unique way Hopper captured American life.
Important Information:
Film Start Time: Doors open at 3:00pm, and the film will begin promptly at 4:00pm. As our films are general admission seating, please be sure to arrive early to secure your seat. Beer, wine, and concessions will be available.

- All tools, materials and tuition for 2 hours of beadcraft, whipping up your own snazzy sunglasses chain whilst you soak up the chilled tunes and great vibes.
- A welcome drink of your choosing - an arvo glass of bubbles, a local wine, a refreshing beer or cider, or sip something non-alcoholic. All the usual suspects will be available, and they have an incredibly well-stocked bar for additional bevs. Their kitchen will also be open if you’re peckish for chippies, sliders, tacos, pizzas and the like!
It's $65 each including your first drink, or book with a friend and pay $60 each because sharing is caring. ,
