History and Background

Pottsville was founded by Kirkbride Potts, who traveled from New Jersey to Arkansas in 1824. He settled near the Arkansas River with the Logan brothers in an area ceded by the Choctaw tribe. After the Cherokee were relocated in 1828, Potts moved to land near Crow Mountain and built a log cabin. He acquired 160 acres at a discounted rate, eventually expanding to 650 acres for 25 cents per acre. Putting that into perspective, the average cost per acre today is $10,675 and up!

In the 1850s, Potts built a larger home, which became Potts Station, a rest stop for the Overland Mail route. His son James, later appointed postmaster, named the town Pottsville in honor of his father, and it was incorporated in 1897.

Pottsville grew with the arrival of the Associate Reformed Presbyterians from the Carolinas in 1851. The town's Methodist and Baptist churches were founded in the late 1800s. Transportation advancements, including a stage route and the Little Rock-Fort Smith Railroad, played a key role in its development.

In the 20th century, the town center shifted after the construction of Interstate 40. Pottsville’s schools became regional leaders in technology, winning grants and recognition, including support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
