OCC trail maintenance day

RVOORC is hosting a volunteer day on the OCC trail at Illinois Bayou Park. We will meet at the upper parking lot. Volunteers are needed for transportation shuttle, volunteer check in, trail building, brush clearing, tool issue and overall team support. Work location will vary from parking lot to the new trail site (~3/4 mile form parking lot). This work is very accessible and transportation will be available from parking lot to work site. We will scratch out a new trail that starts at the end of the paved trail. This new trail will wind its way through a scenic area. The new trail will be approximately 1/3 mile in length. The overall goal is to have at least 20 volunteers! Work hours will be from 9 am til we get hungry or tired. Lunch, snacks and drinks will be provided.

This hike covers nearly 2 miles and covers rolling terrain.

Meet the park interpreters at the main entryway of Mather Lodge to begin a car-caravan to our local Arkansas Archeological Survey Station, situated on the grounds of the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute (WRI). Dr. Emily Beahm, Station Archeologist, will help us discover how archeology works and why it is important. The WRI research station of the Survey is responsible for archeological resources in 11 counties of mountainous west-central Arkansas, including the southern fringe of the Ozarks (the Boston Mountains) and a large portion of the Ouachita Mountains.

Join Park Interpreter Carrie for an interesting walk among the giant sandstone boulders and slot canyons of the Bear Cave area. This is a relatively easy ½-mile hike that is great for the whole family. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring water.

ROCK HOUSE CAVE HIKE

Meet Park Interpreter Carrie to hike to the park’s archeology site, Rock House Cave. We will be able to look into the windows f the past by viewing Native American rock art. This hike is ¼-ile long. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring along water.
