Founded around 1828 by Walter Cauthron, Booneville was initially named Bonneville in honor of Captain Benjamin Bonneville. Over time, the spelling changed to Booneville. The town was incorporated in 1878 but was reincorporated in 1899 to accommodate the arrival of the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad, which significantly influenced its growth and development.
