Unlike Mother's Day, which started in the 19th century, Father's Day has a relatively younger history. In the United States, the first recorded observance of Father's Day was on July 5, 1908. This special day happened in a small town in West Virginia, organized by a woman named Grace Golden Clayton. But why did Grace feel the need to honor fathers?

Grace was moved to action following a terrible tragedy that had struck nearby Monongah, West Virginia. A mining disaster in December 1907 had claimed the lives of 361 men. Most of them were fathers, leaving behind around a thousand fatherless children. To remember these brave men and acknowledge the role of fathers, Grace suggested a day dedicated to fathers to her pastor.

Father's Day Struggles for Recognition

Although Grace's commemoration was heartfelt, it didn't ignite a national movement right away. In fact, the concept of Father's Day really gained traction a few years later, in 1910, in Spokane, Washington, thanks to a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd.

Sonora Smart Dodd

Here’s a little known fact: Sonora Louise Smart was actually born right here in the Natural State! She was born in Jenny Lind, Sebastian County, Arkansas in 1882 to farmer William Jackson Smart and his wife Ellen Victoria Cheek Smart. When Sonora was 16, her mother died giving birth to her brother Marshal. Sonora was the only daughter and helped her father raise her younger brothers. William was twice widowed. And his second wife, Ellen, was also a widow with three children from her previous marriage. William also had five grown children from his previous marriage, in addition to the six children he and Ellen had together.

The Idea is Born

In 1909, Sonora attended a church service in honor of Mother’s Day, which had recently become a recognized holiday, If there was a day to honor Mothers, why wasn’t there one to honor Fathers, she wondered? She petitioned the Spokane Ministerial Association and the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) to establish a Father’s Day on June 5th, her father’s birthday. While they loved the idea, they weren’t able to pull things together quickly enough. So, the first Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane on June 19, 1910.

Despite Sonora's efforts, many were hesitant about the idea of Father's Day. Some felt it was just an attempt to copy Mother's Day, while others believed it was simply a marketing scheme to sell more products. This skepticism led to slow acceptance of the celebration.

Father's Day Becomes Official

Even though people began celebrating Father's Day across various states, it took quite a while for it to become an official holiday. The first breakthrough came in 1924 when President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day. However, it wasn't until 1966 that President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day.

But the most surprising fact is that Father's Day only became a national holiday, under President Richard Nixon's administration. That's more than 60 years after Mother's Day was recognized!

Father's Day Around the World

The idea quickly became popular, and countries all over the world started to celebrate Father’s Day. While the U.S. celebrates Father's Day on the third Sunday in June, not all countries follow this tradition. In many Spanish speaking countries, Festa del papa is celebrated on March 19, the same day as St. Joseph's Day, who is considered the father of all dads. In Thailand, they celebrate Wan Por on December 5, which is the birthday of their king, who they consider like a father to their country.

Different countries celebrate in unique ways. In China, they call Father’s Day “BaBa Day,” and families usually get together to enjoy a special meal. In Mexico, they have food, drinks, music, and dancing. In Australia and New Zealand, kids usually surprise their dads with breakfast in bed and presents.

The Commercial Side of Father's Day

There's no denying that Father's Day, like many other holidays, has a commercial aspect. The National Retail Federation estimated that in 2019, Americans spent a whopping $16 billion on Father's Day gifts! Remember when people thought Father's Day was a ploy to sell more goods? Well, it seems they weren't completely wrong!

Why Father’s Day is Important

Father’s Day is not just about giving gifts; it’s a day to think about the important role dads play in our lives. Studies show that when dads are involved, kids do better. Children with involved fathers tend to score higher on tests of cognitive development and are more likely to succeed in school. They are also less likely to develop behavioral problems and more likely to have positive relationships with others. So, a fathers involvement really makes a big difference.
