History of Petit Jean

Petit Jean State Park is named after a French girl named Petit Jean, who disguised herself as a boy and stowed away on an expedition to the New World in the 1700s. According to legend, Petit Jean fell ill during the journey and revealed her true identity to the other explorers before passing away. She is said to be buried on top of Petit Jean Mountain.

The park itself was established in the 1920s and covers more than 3,000 acres. It features an extensive trail system, a lake, a waterfall, and several historic structures and exhibits.

Activities

Hiking is one of the most popular activities in Petit Jean State Park, and with good reason. The park offers a variety of trails ranging from easy to strenuous, with options for hikers of all skill levels. Some of the most popular trails include the Cedar Falls Trail, the Seven Hollows Trail, and the Bear Cave Trail.

Fishing is another favorite pastime in the park, thanks to its 170-acre Lake Bailey. The lake is stocked with a variety of fish species, including catfish, bass, and crappie, making it a great spot for anglers of all skill levels.

If you're looking for a more adventurous way to explore the park, consider signing up for a guided rock climbing or rappelling excursion. The park's rocky cliffs and bluffs make it a popular destination for climbers, and several local outfitters offer guided tours and equipment rentals.

Other popular activities in the park include boating, swimming, camping, and wildlife watching. The park is home to a variety of native wildlife, including deer, black bears, and several species of birds.
