The Prison Story Project is a creative writing/storytelling project that benefits incarcerated women and men. The Prison Story Project was given unprecedented access to men on Arkansas’ Death
Row from May through October 2016. There were 34 men on the row during that time and 11 of those men chose to participate in the project. The inmates met with a volunteer team of writers once
a month in person to explore storytelling concepts with follow-up by mail between visits.

A staged reading of their work – On the Row - was developed and performed by six actors for the men on the row on October 8, 2016. In February 2017 the Governor of Arkansas announced that the state would execute eight men over ten days. Four of the men who participated in the Prison Story Project were on that list. Two of those men were given last minute stays of execution and two
were executed.

The Prison Story Project received funding in 2019 from the Whiting Foundation for the Humanities, through the University of Arkansas, that allowed filming of the staged reading before a live audience during a four-state tour of On the Row. Kathy McGregor, Project Director for the Prison Story Project will introduce the film and provide time after for questions and comments.
